History
The 1820 Settlers were British immigrants brought to the Eastern Cape to strengthen the colonial frontier. Among them was James Louis Charles Hayward, his wife Mary Ann, and their young child, who arrived in Port Elizabeth as part of Menzies’ Party. This group of settlers traveled aboard the Weymouth and disembarked in May 1820. Menzies’ Party, like others, received land in the Eastern Cape, where they faced hardship but played a key role in developing the region. James Hayward and his family contributed to establishing British roots in South Africa, helping shape the cultural and agricultural foundations.

Jacobsz family
History
Jan Jacobsz (Jacobse ter Veere) was born circa 1710–1712 in Veere, Zeeland, Netherlands, and arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1726 as a VOC (Dutch East India Company) seaman. After serving as a pilot (loods) in Palembang, Indonesia, he returned to the Cape and married Anna Catharina Posthumus in 1746. They had four children, but only Gerard Nicolaas Jacobsz (＊ 1751) survived to adulthood and left descendants.
After Anna’s death, Jan remarried Margaretha Alida van der Trans on 10 July 1757. They had two children, including Jan Jacobsz (＊ 1760), who later settled in Graaff-Reinet and fathered descendants through two marriages. These two sons—Gerard Nicolaas and Jan (＊ 1760)—became the primary progenitors of the South African Jacobsz family lines.
Jan became a free burgher in 1748, acquiring land and holding civic roles such as fire marshal and gunner of Fort Knokke. He also owned enslaved people, reflecting his socioeconomic status. He died in Cape Town on 5 May 1786, aged about 74. Today, Jan Jacobsz is recognized as the founding patriarch of the Jacobsz family in South Africa, with descendants dispersed nationwide.
