Compiled by Pieter HJ Krynauw, 1945 en Hubert Krynauw, 1955
Birth of Johanna
The Krynauw maternal ancestor was baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church Drakenstein (Paarl). The church records state:
January 18, 1699
Jeanne, daughter of Izabeau Long, Widow of the late Jean Jourdan, as witnesses
Jacque Mallant and Hanne Fauche, as godmother
We refer to her as “Johanna”.
Johanna’s father

Jean Jourdan, de Belle Etoile, Saint Martin de la Brasque, Provence, France. Born in Luberon around 1660. Arrived in the Cape on the VOC ship China on 4 August 1688. Granted land in Oliphantshoek (Franschhoek) which he named “La Motte”, probably after his wife’s home town. He passed away between March 1698 and Jan1699 (before Johanna’s baptism)
Jourdan grandparents
Pierre Jourdan “Carretier” de Belle Etoile, Saint Martin de la Brasque, Provence, France, passed away 28.2.1677. Married in 1646 to Jehane Marque, born 1628. She passed away in 1688 on the ship China on the way to the Cape.

Marriages- Johanna’s father and stepfather
Jean Jourdan and Isabeau Long were on the same Huguenot ship to the Cape Colony in 1688 but probably only got married around 1689, likely in the Drakenstein district. Isabeau married Jacques Malan in 1699, after the death of Johanna’s father, Jean. Jacques Malan, b 1665 was also from Saint Martin d’Aigues in Provence.

The Huguenot’s flight to freedom- from France to the Cape Colony
Around the middle of August 1687 a Jourdan family from Belle Etoile (and others) flee the Luberon up the valley of the Durance and through the Dauphiné Alps for Geneva, Frankfurt and Holland. This was the start of a 12 month journey to the Cape Colony
The Jourdan family consisted of Jeanne Marque (Johanna’s grandmother) and her two youngest sons, Pierre and Jean Jourdan (Johanna’s father), as well as her widowed daughter Marie Jourdan and her three children, Jeanne, Marie and Marguerite Rousse (Roux). Isabeau Long (Johanna’s mother) also joined the group.
The flight of these people through France, Switzerland and Germany, and their subsequent journey on the VOC ship, China, to the Cape must have been extremely challenging.
It was a long and difficult journey and 3 of the 8 members of this Jourdan group lost their lives on the 4 month voyage. They departed from Goeree, Holland on 20 March 1688 and arrived in the Cape on 4 Aug 1688
On the voyage the Jourdans lost Jeanne Marque and her daughter Marie Jourdan, as well as Marie’s daughter Jeanne.
You have to understand that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land
(Huguenot Museum, Franschhoek)
Jean Jourdan (Johanna’s father) and his brother Pierre, and two nieces, Marie and Marguerite Rousse, arrive in the Cape as well as Isabeau Long (who later married Johanna’s father)
Impact of Johanna’s mother- Isabeau Long
Isabeau 1668-1736 had a big impact on the Krynauw, Jourdan and Malan families in South Africa.
1. She was the mother of Johanna Jourdan, the maternal ancestor of the Krynauws
2. She was the mother of Paul Jourdan (who had 9 children) and Louis Jourdan (7 children) who became progenitors of two distinct branches of the Jordaan family in South Africa.
3. Her second husband was Malan ancestor and she was the mother of, among others Daniel Malan (13 children) and David Malan (9 children), who played a significant role in the agricultural and civic development of the Cape Colony. Prominent descendants include a Prime Minister, Dr DF Malan.
4. Her first husband Jean Jourdan was the first owner of the farm La Motte, which she inherited in 1699. Her grandson, Daniel Krynauw (Johanna’s eldest son – Second generation), bequeathed La Motte as well as Frederiks Berg to his 6 children upon his death in 1781.
Note: The Jourdan/Krynauw La Motte farm is “La Motte (Monument- 1694) (Bo-la Motte)”. There was another la Motte farm that was granted to Hans Hattingh, namely “La Motte (Wemmershoek)”. This is currently the Rupert family’s La Motte Estate. “Frederiks Berg” is today Fredericksburg, which is part of Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons’ interests in Franschhoek.
Her grave is at Stellenbosch Dutch Reformed Church (grave no 8) with Jacob Malang and two grand children.
