Excerpts from “The Krynauw family” by David Willem Krynauw (03/02/1908)
This deals with the family history of the ancestor’s son Daniel and his descendants up to Pieter Hendrik Johannes Krynauw, born 1861, his children and grandchildren. It has been shortened and edited for the purposes of this website by his sons, H Hubert, born 1955 and Pieter HJ, born 1945

1707
Arrive in the Cape
Ancestor Daniel Krynauw

The ancestor Daniël Krynauw arrived in the Cape from Grabow in Germany in 1707. He was the only Krynauw to come to South Africa and, moreover, he was unmarried. These factors contributed to the family’s relatively small distribution.

Upon his arrival, there were already a considerable number of German families with whom he could interact socially. By far, most of the unmarried men were Germans, connected to the garrison. Daniël had completed military service in his homeland, but he did not come to the Cape as a soldier. Instead, he arrived as a saddler, a role in which he made significant contributions to the transport services of the time. He was skilled in crafting saddles for horsemen and harnesses for draft animals.

It is unclear why he left the Cape and settled in the Drakenstein. He was likely drawn to the rural atmosphere and the strong religious culture that prevailed there. Additionally, the countryside offered ample opportunities for him to practice his trade.

Good-looking ladies were scarce in the Cape, and in Drakenstein, this challenge was exacerbated by the fact that French families preferred to marry within their own community. On 19 June 1718, Daniël married Johanna Jourdan, a 19-year-old woman from a French family.

1718
Marriage
Maternal ancestor- Jeanne Jourdan

The family of the maternal ancestor, Jeanne Jourdan (Johanna), sailed from Goeree, Holland to the Cape. on the VOC ship China, on 20 March 1688, and arrived in the Cape on 4 Aug 1688. Jean Jourdan (ancestor’s father), his brother, Pierre, his mother and sister, widow Marie Roux as well as her three daughters, were part of the Huguenot group. Jean was the son of Pierre Jourdan (Senior) and Jehane Marque of Belle Etoile, Saint Martin de la Brasque, France. Jean's mother, his sister and her eldest daughter died en route. Jean (28) settled in Oliphantshoek (Franschhoek) on the farm La Motte, named after their place of origin. Jean Jourdan married Isabeau Long (Le Long) in 1690. Isabeau Long was the daughter of Pierre and Jeanne le Longe. Jeanne (Johanna/Janne) was the youngest daughter of Jean Jourdan and Isabeau, who was baptised on 18 Jan 1699 in Drakenstein (Paarl). Jean, Johanna's father, died in 1698, shortly before her baptism, and her mother later married Jacques Malan. The children of the ancestor, Daniel and ancestor, Johanna, are indicated below at 1721-28

1721-1728
Daniel and Christiaan
Children- Second generation

From the marriage of Daniël Krynauw and Johanna Jourdan five children were born, of whom only three reached adulthood: Elizabeth (1719), Daniël (16 November 1721), Catharina (1724), Christiaan (21 July 1726) and Johannes (13 November 1728).

The Krynauw children lost their father at a very young age.The exact date is unknown, but it must have been between 1728 and 1734. Johanna Jourdan remarried on 31 October to Andreas Hasselbaart, originally from Halle in Saxony. There is no record that children were born from this marriage.

The children would not have been completely neglected. Their grandmother Isabeau le Long and her husband Jacque Malan, would probably have looked after their welfare. The Malan children were already married and independent and Isabeau le Long had in her own right, among other things, two farms - apart from her husband's possessions.

The two sons of the progenitors Daniël, born 1721 and Christiaan, born 1726, are the second generation.

Both were the father of 10 children, of whom 11 reached adulthood, 5 from Daniël and 6 from Christiaan's family. The descendants of Christiaan surpass Daniël's in numbers.

We will now discuss the descendants of the two brothers separately. When dealing with Daniël's descendants we focus on the lineage of Pieter Hendrik Johannes Krynauw (born 1861). He is the 6th generation in the Daniël line.

Daniel's brother Christiaan
Focus of this timeline is on Daniel's descendants
Second generation-Christiaan Krynauw

Christiaan Krynauw, born 21 July 1726 and married Magdalena Lombard on 30 August. Ten children were born of the marriage.

Ten children

Johanna Catharina (8/1/1750); Helena Emmerentia (13/8/1752); Daniël (13/1/1754); Johannes (22/8/1756); Anthonie (26/11/1758); Elizabeth Maria (18/5/1760); Christiaan (6/5/1762); David (3/2/1765); Christoffel (15/2/1767); Catharina Johanna (17/7/1768).

Because this investigation is focused only on another part of the family, it is mainly about seeing the whole family in perspective and then also more specifically in terms of numbers and distribution. For this reason only the sons are taken into consideration. Three of the sons, namely Anthonie, Christiaan and Christoffel probably did not reach marriageable age and therefore made no contribution.

A1 David Krynauw, born 3/2/1765, married Maria Walters on 20 August 1789. The marriage produced four children, but only one son:

B1 Christiaan Stephanus Sebastiaan, born 22 June 1794 married Beatrix Jacoba van der Westhuizen, had four children, of whom two were sons:

C1 Christiaan Gysbert – no descendants.

C2 David Anthonie, born 25 May 1817. His marriages produced five children, of whom four were sons;

D1 David Wilhelm – six sons.

D2 Daniël Johannes only one son, but three grandsons

D3 Christiaan – four sons

D4 Jacob Daniël – four sons

A2 Johannes, baptized 22/8/1756 married on 15/11/1778 to Johanna Maria Walters and remarried to Johanna de Flamingh. Six children were born from this marriage, two of whom were sons who contributed:

B1 Johannes Hendrik – six sons

C1 Johannes – two sons

B2 Daniël Eduard – two sons

B3 Johannes Hermanus – one son

B4 Anthonie – one son

B5 Pieter Hendrik – no sons

B6 Jacobus Cornelius – two sons

A3 Daniël was baptized on 13 January 1754 and married Anna Maria Smit on 27/7/1788. He remarried in 1809 to Susanna Maria de Villiers.

In connection with the latter marriage there is some uncertainty. Susanna Maria de Villiers was the sixth child of Petrus Johannes de Villiers, married on (…) August 1764 to Susanna Maria de Villiers (his niece). This daughter was married to Izak Francois de Villiers (also related, because he was the grandson of Jean de Villiers) married to Hester Melius. The genealogical lists state that after Izak's death, she married Daniël David Krynauw. (Daniël's son). It now appears that the marriage was concluded with Daniël Krynauw – the son of Christiaan.

Daniël Krynauw had five children from his marriage to Anna Maria Smit, of whom Christiaan was the only son. Because the latter had no descendants, it was assumed that Daniël also had no Krynauw descendants. It now appears that from his marriage to Susanna Maria de Villiers, there was a son, namely Anthonie David, born 20 September 1816. He married Helena Gie in 1838. Five children were born from this marriage.

A. Daniël Krynauw married Susanna Maria de Villiers.

B. Antonie David born 20 September 1816 and married Helena Gie.

C. 1. Elizabeth Helena married Richard Southey.

2. Susanna married Charles Bell.

3. Antoinette Charlotte married D Walker.

4. Daniël – unmarried – the Surveyor-General.

5. Johannes Coenraad born 2 June 1845, married Elizabeth Bowman. Their only son Anthony Henry Krynauw born 3 November 1882 was married to Bertha van der Spuy and they were the parents of Dr Rowland Anthony Harold Krynauw, the well-known brain specialist (neurologist).

For background
Comparing descendants of 2nd generation
Distribution Christiaan vs Daniel

If we now compare the distribution possibilities of the two Krynauw brothers, namely Daniël (1721) and Christiaan (1726), it is clear that the descendants of Christiaan must far exceed those of Daniël in numbers. As was the case with Christiaan, Daniël was also the father of 10 children born from two marriages. From the first marriage, the contribution of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw was limited to one son and only in the fourth Krynauw generation were there three sons.

The rapid distribution in the case of the Christiaan Krynauws began earlier and therefore extends over a longer period.

For the sake of coherence and the overall picture I must also refer to the son from the second marriage: Daniël Krynauw (16 November 1721) married on 26 February 1769 to Elizabeth Muller, nee de Villiers:

Daniël David Krynauw, 11 March 1770 and married on 28 January 1816 to Maria Susanna Disandt. From this marriage seven children were born, of whom the eldest was Daniël and the youngest David. Of the two brothers, only Daniël contributed to the descendants. Daniël was married to a lady de Villiers. The marriage produced two sons:

1. Daniël David married a lady Stegmann. They had only one son, David, who in turn also had only one son, Daniël David. The latter also had only one son and this brings this generation to the second half of the 20th century.

2. David Pieter was married to a lady van der Westhuizen. They had only one son who apparently left no family.

It is not certain whether this David Pieter also had a share in the old Cape Town firm DP Krynauw & Co. Probably his Uncle Daniël Pieter was the founder – the grandson of Daniël Krynauw and his second wife Elisabeth Muller, née de Villiers.

1721
Married Margaretha Marais
Second generation Daniel Krynauw

Daniël Krynauw, 15 November 1721, married Margaretha Marais, 7 March 1728, on 16 October 1757.

The Marais family arrived in the Cape in 1688, coming from Plessis-Marle in France (Plessis-Marle was the French Huguenot town from which Charles Marais and his family fled in 1687 to settle in the Groot Drakenstein Valley in South Africa. Marais named his farm, granted to him by Governor Simon van der Stel, after his home town, which is now known as Plaisir de Merle. The farm has a rich history, including Charles Marais's role as one of the early French winemakers in the Cape.) The parents were Charles Marais, married to Catherine Taboureaux. Charles was murdered on his farm by a Hottentot in 1689. The children who landed here were Claude (24 years), Charles (18), Isaac (16) and Marie (6). Isaac died without issue. The Marais families in South Africa probably descended entirely from Charles Marais, married to Anna de Ruelle.

Epidemics

Previous generations not only had to contend with dangers and threats from natives or wild animals, but all kinds of epidemics. The smallpox epidemic during the 18th century claimed many lives. In 1712 there was such an epidemic that resulted in the population falling from 878 to 782 between 1711 and 1713, despite the very high birth rate of that time. During the 18th century, 300 new immigrants came to the Cape. The census figure of 1793 shows that the population had fallen from 1756 to 1585 due to the high birth rate. There was no talk of proper medical services and hospitalisation and in cramped houses it is practically impossible to keep the sick in isolation in the case of infectious diseases. Disasters over which they had no control demanded great sacrifices from the ancestors.

The Daniel Krynauw family

Daniël Krynauw, 16 November 1721, married Margaretha Marais, 7 March 1728 on 16 October 1757 and remarried on 26 February 1769 to Elizabeth Muller née De Villiers.

Daniël and his brother Christiaan both had a brood of ten children. Only eleven of their children reached adulthood, five from Daniël's family and six from Christiaan. As for Daniël, two sons and three daughters entered into marriages, from the first marriage, Stephanus Johannes, and from the second, Daniël David, procreated the Krynauw family – the latter through two sons, namely Daniël and David. Stephanus Johannes through one son, namely Daniël Eliza. The latter also had three sons, namely Stephanus Johannes, Abraham Johannes Christoffel and Daniël Eliza.

Note: Upon his death in 1781, Daniel owned the farms La Motte and Frederiks Berg which were bequeathed to his 6 children (See Inventory at 1721 above)

1764
Married Maria le Roux
Third generation-Stephanus Johannes

Stephanus Johannes Krynauw, 16 September 1764 and married Maria Claudina le Roux on 17 October 1790. Very little is known about Stephanus. He was about two years old when his mother died and less than five years old when his father married Elizabeth de Villiers. Stephanus later became a resident of Stellenbosch, but it is not known whether the move to Stellenbosch took place before or after his marriage. His bride's parents were also in the Stellenbosch congregation, namely Pieter le Roux who married Maria Claudina du Buisson on 17 October 1741.

It is therefore possible that he received education in the Drakenstein or that he and his future wife were both in the school in Stellenbosch, where his uncle Christiaan was the teacher.

From the marriage of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw with Maria Claudina le Roux seven children were born. It seems as if only one son and two daughters reached adulthood.

1. Maria Claudina 11 September 1791 and on 15 November 1818 married Pieter Albertus Gunter.

2. Margaretha Johanna 1 December 1793

3. Elizabeth Johanna 20 August 1797 and on 15 November 1818 married G J Ritter

4. Daniël Eliza 8 September 1799 and on 2 May 1824 married Susanna Claudina le Roux.

5. Pieter Hendrik Johannes 21 March 1802.

6. Margaretha Carolina 27 September 1807.

7. Catharina Johanna 4 June 1809.

Since both Stephanus Johannes Krynauw and his son Daniël Eliza Krynauw married daughters from the Le Roux family, it is necessary to check the Le Roux lineage and the mutual relationship.

Maria le Roux family
Le Roux history
Le Roux connection

Maria Claudina le Roux

A. The ancestors were Jean le Roux married Jeanne Muoy. The lineage runs as follows:

B. Pierre le Roux 12 December 1706 married in 1726 Magdalena Cellier.

C. Pieter le Roux married Maria Claudina du Buisson on 19 March 1741.

D. Maria Claudina le Roux married Stephanus Johannes Krynauw on 17 October 1790.

As for these ancestors, they were:

1.Jeanne Muoy the sister of Maria Muoy, the ancestor of the Retief family.

2.Madalena Cellier was the daughter of Josue Cellier who came from Orleans, France with his wife Elizabeth Couvret. They are the ancestors of the Cilliers and Cillie families in South Africa.

3.Maria Claudina du Buisson's parents were Jean or Jan du Buisson married Maria Cronje in 1733. Her parents were Pierre Cronje, married Susanna Taillefer. Jean du Buisson's parents were David du Buisson from La Rochelle in France. He was a schoolmaster, especially in the Hottentots-Holland, and married Claudine Lombard, the daughter of Pierre Lombard and Marie Couteau, both from Dauphine in France.

Daniël Eliza Krynauw, married Susanna Claudina le Roux

A. The ancestors are Gabriël le Roux and Maria Catharina le Febré. He and his older brother Jean came to the Cape from Blois in France in 1688. The two brothers died of drowning on the same day.

B. Pieter le Roux married Francoise (Francina) Cellier on 12 April 1727, the daughter of Josué Cellier and Elisabeth Couvret.

C. Gabriël le Roux (1731) married Susanna Maree on 21 December 1758.

D. Daniël Petrus le Roux (12 November 1769) married Claudina Magdalena Maree on 8 November 1795.

E. Susanna Claudina le Roux (28 September 1800) married Daniël Eliza Krynauw on 2 May 1824 in Paarl – 8 September 1799.

Since Susanna Claudina le Roux’s father and her grandfather were both married to daughters from the Mareé family, it is necessary to examine this family to establish the mutual relationship.

  1. The ancestors were Ignace Mareé, a French refugee, who married Susanna van Vuuren. Her father was Gerrit Janse van Vuuren, who came to the Cape from the Netherlands in 1691 and married Susanne Jacob(s) here. Both of her parents were French Huguenots, with the surname Jacob.
  2. The eldest son, Johannes Mareé, married Sara Delport, the daughter of Jacques de la Porte and Sara Vitu or Vitout, the ancestors mentioned above.
  3. Susanna Mareé married Gabriël le Roux on 21 December 1758.Their sixth child, Daniël Petrus le Roux, married Claudina Magdalena Mareé on 8 November 1795.
  4. Her parents were Ignatius Mareé (born 14 August 1729), the ninth child of the ancestors and the brother of Johannes Mareé. Ignatius Mareé married Claudina du Toit on 16 July 1775. Claudina Magdalena Mareé was the firstborn of this marriage. However, Ignatius Mareé had already fathered ten children from previous marriages. Claudina du Toit was the daughter of Gabriël du Toit and Claudina van Hoeting."

Du Toit

A. Francois du Toit, married to Susanna Seugnet.

B. Andries du Toit, married Martha Rousseau, the daughter of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief.

C. Gabriël du Toit, married Claudina van Hoeting. Her parents were Gerrit van Hoeting, born Amsterdam in 1701 and married on 15 August 1728 Claudine Lombard, the widow of David du Buisson.

The fact that Stephanus Johannes Krynauw and his son Daniël Eliza both married women from the Le Roux family holds no significance in terms of kinship. Their ancestors were brothers, and the shared lineage dates back too far to the parents of these two brothers. Similarly, the fact that the two eldest sons of the brothers married the Cellier sisters is also of little consequence in this regard.

Regarding Susanna Claudina le Roux, there is a closer relationship due to the fact that her mother and grandmother were cousins—daughters of the brothers Ignatius Mareé and Johannes Mareé, respectively.

The only other common factor in the lineage is Claudine Lombard. Daniël Eliza Krynauw's grandmother was the granddaughter of David du Buisson and Claudine Lombard. Meanwhile, his wife, Susanna Claudina le Roux, descended from Claudine Lombard’s marriage to Gerrit van Hoeting, making her a great-granddaughter of Claudine Lombard. Therefore, there is no question of a blood relationship between Daniël Eliza Krynauw and his wife, Susanna Claudina le Roux.

1799
Married Susanna le Roux
Fourth generation- Daniel Elisa

The family of Daniël Eliza Krynauw and Susanna Claudina le Roux.

It is certainly possible that daughters were born from this marriage, but I have not been able to trace them. The only children for whom information exists are the three sons:

1. Stephanus Johannes Krynauw, born 18 September 1825 and baptized Caledon on 9 October 1825.

2. Abraham Johannes Christoffel Krynauw, baptised Caledon 6 April 1828.

3. Daniël Eliza born 1830 and married Maria Aletta du Toit 19 September 1833 – a younger sister of Anna Elizabeth du Toit (married to Stephanus Johannes Krynauw – fifth generation).

Unfortunately I do not have the details regarding the marriage of Abraham Johannes Christoffel, baptized 6 April 1828. Five children were born from the marriage: the son Machiel did not survive; Daniël married Uys, apparently left no descendants. The other son Abraham Johannes Christoffel – 18 April 1874 was married to a girl Kleynhans from Heidelberg, Cape. They were also blessed with a brood of five children of whom four were sons:

1. Theodorus Ernest, married to Erasmus – two sons and one daughter.

2. Abraham Johan, married to Wagner – two children, both daughters.

3. Carel Rudolph Kleinhans – no family.

4. Daniël Eliza – married to a girl Raal. No children.

This cousin of Dad, known as Oom Awie was initially a wheat farmer in the Heidelberg district, Cape, where he was also married. During a visit he took a fancy to a farm in the Vrede district and he and the owner agreed to exchange their farms. Such a transaction is certainly very peculiar. As a child I met Oom Awie in Beaufort West. When we were at Theunissen, Uncle Awie came to visit us. He was already a retired farmer and had just married a charming widow. They were on their way because he wanted to visit places where he used to live.

Daniël Eliza was born in 1830 and married Maria Aletta du Toit, born 19 September 1833, baptized Caledon 27 October 1833. She was a younger sister of Anna Elizabeth du Toit, married to Stephanus Johannes Krynauw. They were the daughters of Willem Johannes du Toit who married Margaretha Johanna Susanna du Toit on 30 September 1795. Details regarding their descent are given in "Fifth generation" – Stephanus Johannes Krynauw, below.

Daniël Eliza Krynauw and Maria Aletta du Toit had a family of 9 children, of whom five were sons:

I Daniël Eliza (1857) married S Maree, from this marriage 8 children were born, but only two sons contributed to the Krynauw family.

(a) Josias Stephanus – one son and one daughter. This son in turn also had only one son.

(b) Barend Leendert married Erasmus – 5 children, of whom two sons had Krynauw family.

(i) Barend Leendert, married Yule – two sons.

(ii) Werner – two sons.

II Michiel Daniël du Toit Krynauw 8/10/1867, was married to Susanna le Roux. Four children were born from the marriage, but only two sons. One son made no Krynauw contribution, the other brother Daniël a son named Michiel Daniël du Toit.

III Willem Johannes, married to Beneke. Three children, but only one son, Daniël Eliza. His marriage details are unknown, but I understand he had two sons.

IV Abraham Johannes had only one son, Daniël Eliza, married to Van der Merwe, remarried to Lourens but apparently there were no children. The other son Daniël Eliza also had a son – Daniël Eliza.

1825
Married Anna du Toit
Fifth generation-Stephanus Johannes

Stephanus Johannes Krynauw, born 18 September 1825 and baptized Caledon on 9 October 1825, married to Anna Elizabeth du Toit, born on 6 December 1829 and baptized Caledon on 24 January 1830. She was the daughter of Willem Johannes du Toit, 20 September 1795 and married on 8 June 1826 in Worcester to Margaretha Johanna Susanna du Toit.

Stephanus and his wife moved from Caledon and settled in the Beaufort West district.

I never had the privilege of seeing one of our grandparents—not even a portrait. His age coincided with that of President Kruger, as Stephanus Krynauw was baptized in Caledon on 9 October 1825. His beard was styled in the fashion of that era, known as the “Kruger beard.” His hair and beard were reportedly dark, whereas his sons had reddish-light coloring. Whether they inherited this trait from the Du Toit or Le Roux family, I do not know.

One would love to learn more about them. The sons often boasted about their mother’s remarkable skill with the needle—she could even make men’s clothing. Whether she tailored outfits for the 'Man about Town' or mainly farm attire remains uncertain.

The ancestors are presented to us as people of the Bible, the rifle, and the family tree—but were there also family portraits, as the poet mentions?

The once-beloved face grows dim,
Its features lost to memory’s haze.
Silver moths of time devour it,
And piece by piece, it fades away.

I do not even know for sure where they died and were buried. I think it was Britstown. What was passed down by them to their descendants from generation to generation is of inestimable value. If we continue in this tradition, we can certainly expect blessings in the future. Two weeks before his death in 1904, President Kruger wrote a letter to General Botha in which the following words appear: "Whoever wants to create a future, must not lose sight of the past. Therefore: Search the past for all the good and beauty that can be discovered in it, form your ideal accordingly and try to realize that ideal before the future".

Children of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw

1. Margaretha born 22 August 1851

2. Daniël Eliza, 21 April 1853

3 Willem Johannes, 25 July 1855

4. Stephanus Johannes, 26 September 1857

5. Andries Stephanus, 3 September 1859

7. Susanna Maria, 18 December 1863

8. Anna Francina, 14 May 1867

9. Maria Claudina, 6 May 1869

The daughters

1. Margaretha was married to Schalk van Heerden. His daughter from a previous marriage, Johanna Francina, was married to Andries Stephanus Krynauw. Uncle Schalk was therefore his brother-in-law and his father-in-law. Only one son, Isak van Heerden, was born from this marriage. He was married to a young Visser from Fraserburg and I believe only two daughters were born of the marriage. Isak was the youngest. His sisters were Margaretha, Anna Elisabeth, Lizzy and Fanny. Lizzie was married to Philip MaClaghlan. Fanny I believe was married to Coetzer. Two sisters were married to two Lubbe brothers.

2. Susanna Maria died young.

3. Anna Francina (was engaged to a certain Baker. He took cattle to sell in Graaff Reinet and nothing was heard of him again. Father believed that he was robbed and murdered and Anna never married.)

4. Maria Claudina, born 6 May 1869 and married JH van Enter – two children:

(i) Johanna Justina married C Fourie

(ii) Anna Elisabeth Stephanie.

The sons

1. Daniël Elisa, born 21 April 1853, married Sarah Polley – 4 children:

I. Stephanus Johannes, 1 September 1885, married a lady Pheiffer in 1917, 4 children:

(a) Lucas Marthinus born 20.8.1919, married 1953 a lady Stander van Parys, 2 children:

(c) Christina Maria Isabella, born 13 June 1924 and married 1947 to D Gouws – 2 children: Daniël and Christopher.

(d) Susara Adriana, born 9 September 1934 and married 1956 to A. Baldock – 4 children: Christine, May, Jonathan and Steven.

II. Martha married Bredenkamp.

III. Anna Elisabeth married J Magnus.

IV. Cornelius born 1899 and married Elisabeth Otto. Their son Daniël Elisa died in an accident in 1944.

2. Willem Johannes Krynauw, born 25 July 1855, married Hermina van Enter.

I. Stephanus Johannes married A Swart and after her death Ms. L Roux: five children. Wilhelm Johannes, Roux, Tertius, Alta married Grobbelaar and Stephanus Johannes.

II. Jan Hermanus van Enter Krynauw, 12 June 1894, married Maria Johanna Zikmann in 1919. Her father, Johan Zikmann, was the Koster in Beaufort West from 1897 to 1917. Van Enter was Station Master in the service of the Railways at various places. He was a good athlete in his day and especially a keen football player.

Unfortunately I did not know their children. The son Francois Zikmann Krynauw was married to a lady Du Toit and I understand that a son and two daughters were born from this marriage. Francois was employed by the Department of Justice as Magistrate. His brother Willem Johannes, born 18 May 1921, was also married and from the marriage a son, Johan, and a daughter, Bridget, were born.

The daughter, Ester Gertuida, born 10 April 1926, married to P. Rousseau, was blessed with three children: Riana, Johannes and Elizbe. A third son, Van Enter, was not married. The fourth son Hermanus Johannes, 21 January 1940, was also married and I understand that a daughter Thea was born from the marriage. The sixth child was a daughter Ria, 18 January 1942, married to Kruger and a son and a daughter were born from the marriage.

III. Francoise Adriana, married to Stephanus Francois Pienaar (Boy) – two children: Mercia married to Louw and Muloy.

IV. Anna Elizabeth – unmarried.

V. Wilhelmina Johanna married to D Liebenberg

VI. Johanna Justina, married to G Liebenberg.

VII. Hermina Justina, married to P H J Toerien – children apparently already deceased.

3. Stephanus Johannes Krynauw, 26 September 1857 was married to Maria de Villiers. Father and this brother of his were married to sisters. Aunt Maria was younger than Mother and her date of birth therefore approximately 1865. Six children were born from the marriage:

A. De Villiers married to a lady Devenish.

B. Edward Mellville was married to a lady Lubbe.

C. Stehanus Johannes – unmarried

D. Anna Elisabeth – unmarried.

E. Maria Christina – unmarried.

F. Daniël Eliza – I suspect that he was also married to a Devenish.

All six children are already deceased.

4. Andries Stephanus Krynauw was born on 3 September 1859 and later married a woman from the Heerden family—I believe her name was Johanna Francina. I was only a young boy when she passed away in 1921 after a long and painful battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Oom Schalk van Heerden from a previous marriage, before he married Margaretha Krynauw. Oom Schalk was therefore both Oom Andries’ father-in-law and his brother-in-law. As far as I remember, they all called him Boet Schalk.

Oom Andries never remarried. He lived to the age of 94, making him perhaps one of the most enduring widowers in our family. Our father and mother grew old together, and Mother did not outlive him by much. They had twelve children, three of whom—daughters—remained unmarried. One son is still alive with his wife. The widow of one of the sons also passed away relatively soon after him.

For all the other surviving spouses, there was no external obstacle to remarrying. However, only one of our brothers-in-law remarried after our sister’s death; the others all lived out the rest of their lives as widowers.

Uncle Andries never missed a church service, a national festival, or a political meeting unless he was seriously ill. He and Uncle Willie typically visited Dad and Mom on Sunday afternoons, during which they would hold a prayer meeting together. Uncle Andries and his wife had four children.

(a) Anna Elisabeth Sophia was married to her cousin, Stephen Henry Krynauw. On their farm Rietkloof they offered a gathering place for many of the family. They were the parents of Pieter, Andries and Stephanus. A young daughter, Johanna, died of measles at the age of 9. Her mother was also seriously ill and could not even attend the funeral.

(b) Johanna Francina or Joey was a nurse. She and Uncle Andries lived together all these years and she never married.

(c) Stephanus Johannes was married to his cousin Anna Maria de Villiers Krynauw. There was only one son who died as an infant. He was a shopkeeper.

(d) Androlina was married to Piet Brink, a farmer in the Free State. A son and daughter were born from this marriage (Albertus and Johanna).

5. Pieter Hendrik Johannes Krynauw, married to Anna Maria Retief de Villiers.

Anna du Toit family
du Toit history
Du Toit connection

Since both parents of Anna are from the du Toit family, it is necessary that the lineage be checked separately:

Willem Johannes du Toit

A. Ancestors: Francois du Toit, married 12 February 1690 to Susanna Seugnet.

B. Pieter du Toit married Elizabeth Rousseau, the daughter of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief.

C. Francois du Toit, 3 May 1717 and married Petronella van der Merwe on 22 January 1741.

D, Pieter du Toit, 13 October 1741 and married Maria Catharina Botha on 21 April 1765.

E. Francois du Toit, 29 March 1766 married Johanna Gertruida Jacomina Conradie on 5 December 1790. Their third child:

F. Willem Johannes du Toit, 20 September 1795 and married at Worcester on 8 June 1826 Margaretha Johanna du Toit. Her parents were Andries Stephanus du Toit, married Susanna Claudina Joubert.

Margaretha Johanna

A. Francois du Toit, married Susanna Seugnet.

B. Andries du Toit, married 1691 to Martha Rousseau, the daughter of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief on 7 March 1717.

C. Gabriël du Toit, married Claudina van Hoeting, the daughter of Gerrit van Hoeting, married Claudine Lombard, the widow of David du Buisson.

D. Andries Stephanus du Toit, married Susanna Claudina Joubert.

E. Margaretha Johanna Susanna du Toit on 8 June 1826, married Willem Johannes du Toit.

The lineage of Susanna Claudina Joubert is as follows:

A. Pierre Joubert, married Isabeau Richard.

B. Pieter Joubert, married 1 May 1718 Susanna de Villiers, daughter of Abraham de Villiers and Susanne Gardiol.

C. Gideon Joubert, 7 September 1732, married Hester du Toit.

D. Petrus Joubert, married 21 December 1747 Magdalena van Hoeting.

E. Susanna Claudina Joubert married Andris Stephanus du Toit on 11 November 1778:

Magdalena van Hoeting was the daughter of Gerrit van Hoeting, married in 1728 to Claudine Lombard, the widow of David du Buisson.

Hester du Toit, married to Gideon Joubert, was the daughter of Stephanus du Toit, baptized 1693 – son of the ancestors.

Although Anna Elizabeth Krynauw, née Du Toit's parents were both Du Toit, there is no question of kinship. Willem Johannes du Toit's lineage differs vastly from that of his wife. In his lineage there is also a considerable injection of Dutch and German blood, while his wife's lineage mainly followed the French line. Interestingly, in Anna's lineage three sons of the ancestors are eligible, namely Stephanus, Pieter and Andries. The fact that Andries and Pieter were married to a daughter of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief is too far back in the lineage to be of significance in the area of blood relationship.

That there may sometimes be hidden relationships between man and woman, comes to light especially when we examine the lineage of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw and his wife Anna Elizabeth du Toit from the maternal side, both from the Du Toit family:

A. Francois du Toit X Susanna Seugnet.

B. Andries du Toit X Martha Rousseau.

C. Gabriël du Toit X Claudina van Hoeting.

D. Claudina du Toit X Ignatius Mare.

E. Maria Claudina Maree was the grandmother of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw's mother.

Compare with this the lineage of Anna Elisabeth du Toit from the maternal side:

A. Francois du Toit X Susanna Seugnet.

B. Andries du Toit X Martha Rousseau.

C. Gabriël le Roux X Claudina van Hoeting.

D. Andries Stephanus du Toit X Susanna Claudina Joubert.

E. Margaretha Johanna Susanna X Willem Johannes du Toit

F. Anna Elisabeth X Stephanus Johannes Krynauw.

At D in these tables, Claudina du Toit and Andries Stephanus du Toit are sister and brother. Andries and his wife were cousin and niece:

A. Gerrit van Hoeting X Claudine Lombard.

B. Magdalena van Hoeting X Petrus Joubert.

C. Susanna Claudina Joubert X Andries S du Toit.

The same Claudine Lombard above is however also a link in the direct lineage, that is, that of Stephanus Johannes Krynauw from the Father's side:

A. David du Buisson X Claudine Lombard.

B. Jean du Buisson X Marie Cronje.

C. Maria Claudina du Buisson X Pieter le Roux.

D. Maria Claudina le Roux X Stephanus Johanns Krynauw.

E. Daniël Eliza X Susanna Claudina le Roux.

F. Stephanus Johannes X Anna Elizabeth du Toit.

G. Pieter Hendrik Johannes X Anna Maria Retief de Villliers.

Far in history, a connection also comes to light with this marriage, namely in Pieter's lineage from his father's side compared to his wife's lineage from his father's side.

A. Francois du Toit X Susanna Seugnet.

B. Pieter du Toit X Elisabeth Rousseau.

C. Francois du Toit X Petronella van der Merwe

With Anna Maria Retief de Villiers it goes like this:

A. Francois du Toit X Susanna Seugnet.

B. Pieter du Toit X Elisabeth Rousseau.

C. Maria Magdalena du Toit X David de Villiers.

The third generation in both cases was a brother and sister.

Regarding the names of Stephanus Krynauw's Mother, Susanna Claudina and Anna Elizabeth Krynauw, née Du Toit's grandmother Susanna Claudina Joubert – I must point out that in the pedigrees the order in both cases is also indicated as Claudina Susanna

Pieter Hendrik Johannes Krynauw, 26 June 1861 was confirmed in marriage in Beaufort-Wes on 24 May 1886 with Anna Maria Retief de Villiers, 20 October 1863. (Read more about them at Stories)

Father was baptised during the ministry of Rev. Colin Fraser and Mother was baptized during the ministry of Rev. Zim. I therefore suspect that the baptism in both cases was performed by the relevant minister. The marriage was confirmed by Rev. Louis Hugo.

Anna de Villiers family
Family history
De Villiers, Retief and Bantjes

The De Villiers lineage

Parents of Mother: Gideon Jacobus de Villiers 7 September 1828 - ±1876 and Maria Christina Bantjes ±1835 – 1866

Parents: David Hendrik de Villiers 21 October 1787 - ±1848 and Anna Susanna Retief 27 January 1788

Parents: Petrus Francois de Villiers 13 March 1768 – 19/10/1837 and Maria Rousseau 29/12/1765 – 1814

Parents: David de Villiers 23 May 1740 died 1812 and Maria Magdalena du Tot 16 January 1743

Parents: Jean de Villiers 26 June 1699 - ±1744 Hester Melius 29/1/1713 – 1747 married Pieter Loret

Parents: Pierre de Villiers 1657 – 22/1/1720 Elizabeth Taillefer 1674 – 1735

1. Petrus Francois de Villiers' maternal grandfather and grandmother were Pieter du Toit and Elizabeth Rousseau. Petrus' wife, Maria’s grandfather and grandmother were Pierre Rousseau and Maria Retief. Pierre Rousseau and Elizabeth Rousseau were brother and sister.

2. Anna Susanna Retief's grandmother was Anna Marais, the daughter of Daniël Marais married to Aletta Rousseau.

4. Pierre Rousseau, Elizabeth Rouseau and Aletta Rousseau were the children of the ancestors Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief, the sister of Anna Susanna Retief's ancestor Francois Retief, married to Maria Muoy.

5. When we now also take into account the marriage of our Grandfather and Grandmother, Stephanus Johannes Krynauw and Anna Aletta du Toit, the following becomes apparent: Anna Elizabeth du Toit's ancestors on the paternal side were: Pieter du Toit and Elizabeth Rousseau and on the maternal side Andries du Toit and Martha Rousseau, the daughters of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief. On the paternal side she is therefore connected to the de Villiers family through the marriage of David de Villiers with Maria Magdalena du Toit and on the maternal side there is a connection with the Krynauw family.

Despite the fact that the De Villiers, Rousseau and Retief connections are so striking, there are in fact no direct blood relationships. The closest blood relationship is with the marriage of Maria Rousseau's Grandfather and Grandmother: Pierre Rousseau and Maria Retief. This was a cousin marriage, but as previously mentioned, it does not affect the direct lineage.  David Hendrik de Villiers and his wife Anna Susanna Retief moved from Durbanville and settled in the Beaufort West district. All I know is that he was still alive in 1848. At that time he was a widower.

Their children:

1. Pieter Francois, 13 February 1808

2. David Daniël, 20 August 1809

3. Maria Elizabeth, 4 August 1811 married Schabort. They were apparently already married and left behind a Durbanville

4. Anna Magdalena, 1 August 1813.

5. Pieter Gideon Retief, 19 May 1816.

6. Anna Elizabeth, 3 December 1818.

7. David Jacobus, 10 December 1820.

8. Johanna Hermina, married to Charles Pritchard.

9. Daniël Gabriël married Meintjes, and after her death, he married a maid named Meiring from Worcester.

10. Francois Johannes.

11. Gideon Jacobus, baptized 7 September 1828 and married about 1857 to Maria Christina Bantjes, the daughter of Johan Frederick Theobald Bantjes and Gezina Hendrina Dina Mostert.

Anna Maria Retief de Villiers (Ma) born 20 October 1863 was married on 24 May 1886 to Pieter Hendrik Johannes Krynauw, 26 June 1861. She was the fifth child of Gideon Jacobus de Villiers and Maria Christina.

I do not know much about Ma's uncles and aunts. The daughter Maria Elizabeth, married to Schabort is interesting in that she descended from Pierre, married to ElizabethTaillefer and her husband Abraham and Susanna Gardiol. The latter's daughter was married to Johan Christoffel Schabort. It is also known from history that Petrus Johannes Schabort left Durbanville for the Rand in 1886 “to make a fortune there for himself”. He may not have made a fortune, because he bought himself a farm in the Free State and during the Anglo-Boer War he participated in the campaign as a citizen.

Her parents were the sixth De Villiers generation

Gideon Jacobus de Villiers, was the eleventh and last child of David Hendrik de Villiers and Anna Susanna Retief. He was born on 7 September 1828 and he married Maria Christina Bantjies around 1857.

Not much is known about this Grandfather and Grandmother. Mother was still so small when her Mother died and even when her Father died she was no older than 12 or 13 years old. Her Father was the owner of the farms Harmutspoort and Drie Koppen, located on the Nuweveld Mountains in the Beaufort West district. Grandfather and Grandmother were both buried at Harmutspoort in a tomb built with stones. After Grandma's death it was found that there was 1 000 pounds (today R2 000) in her savings book. A substantial amount, considering that the farm women in those days were mostly dependent on an income obtained from the sale of butter, eggs etc. For her personal needs as well as for certain groceries for the household, this reveals a lot about her thrift and care. It may of course also have been possible that they were married out of community of property and that R2 000 was the remaining part of an inheritance. Grandma's lineage runs as follows:

A. Ancestral parents: Jan Geert Bantjes (as sometimes Gerritse and Geertse) married on 7 April 1765 with Hendrina Cornelia Calitz.

B. Matthys Christiaan Bantjes, baptized 1 May 1768 and married on 24 June 1792 to Catharine Dorothea Droskie, baptized 8 March 1761.

C. Johan Frederick Theobald Bantjes, baptized 21 February 1796 and was married to Gezina Hendrina Dina Mostert.

D. Maria Christina Bantjes married Gideon Jacobus de Villiers.

E. Anna Maria Retief de Villiers.

The ancestors: Bantjes

A. Jan Geertse Bantjes came to the Cape from Windschouten or Woudschooten in 1755. From his first marriage concluded on 5 March 1758 one son was born. He remarried on 26 October 1760 and two sons were born from this marriage. After the death of his second wife, he married on 7 April 1765 to Hendrina Cornelia Calitz. She was the daughter of Matthias (or Mattheus) Calitz – originally probably Gallitz, married in 1743 to Petronella van Eeden. Matthias Calitz came to the Cape from Rheinsburg, Germany in 1734. Hendrina's parents were therefore the ancestors of the Calitz family in South Africa. Petronella's ancestors were Jan Janse van Eeden who came to the Cape from Oldenburg in 1662. His wife was Maria Russar of Blois, France whom he married on 13 July 1688. Their son Frederick was born in 1694 and married Hendrina Stevens, who came to the Cape from the Netherlands with her parents. Their daughter, Petronella was the wife of Calitz and their daughter Hendrina Cornelia married Jan Geert Bantjes in 1765.

B. Five children were born from this marriage:

1. Petronella Cornelia 22 June 1766, was married to Louis Basil de Baissac van Lanquedoc.

2. Matthys Christiaan 1 May 1768 was married to Catharina Droskie.

3. Anna Wilhelmina 10 December 1769 was married to Van Deventer.

4. Bertha Margaretha 10 October 1773, was married to Le Roux.

5. Maria Elizabeth 17 August 1777, was married to Van Zyl.

The ancestor Jan Geerts Bantjes died in 1782.

The second generation: Bantjes

Matthys Christiaan Bantjes, baptized 1 May 1768, was married on 24 June 1792 to Catherina Dorothea Droskie, baptized 8 March 1761. Her father was Gottfried Droskie who came to the Cape from Koningsbergen with his parents. He was transferred to Batavia, but returned to the Cape in 1749. On 29 May 1757 he married Aletta van Staden. Their daughter Catharina Dorothea, married Johan Frederich Hesse on 1 December 1781 and after his death she married Matthys Christiaan Bantjes on 24 June 1792.

The children of Gideon Jacobus de Villiers and Maria Christina Bantjes are as follows:

1. David (his family was mostly in the Boland).

2. Jan Frederick Mostert de Villiers, married Annie Buys They farmed on the farm Matjiesfontein, Beaufort West district. After their death, the son Pieter Buys de Villiers inherited the farm and I do not know if any of his children are still there.

Uncle Jan and Aunt Annie had 13 children. As far as I know, there is only one daughter still living. The youngest son, David, was a brilliant student who studied at Stellenbosch and Oxford, and later became a Professor at the University of Pretoria.

3. Gideon Jacobus was married to a lady named Vivier. They farmed on the property Modderdrift and owned several houses in town, which he rented out. The farm was sold when their son Wynand moved to live in town. I can no longer recall how many children were in the family, but I also do not believe any of them are still alive.

4. Gezina, or as we knew her, Aunt Jessie, was married to Edward Melville. He passed away before my time, and I only knew her as a widow. She mostly lived with her daughter, Mrs. Budd, who was also a widow at the time, in Sea Point. When the cold and rain troubled her, she would spend the winter with us a few times each year. She was a very kind and sociable old lady, and we loved her dearly. Her eldest son, Tommy, and our eldest brother were born on the same day. As children, they were very close friends—almost like real twins.

a. Tommy was married to a lady named Chapman. They lived in Kuruman, where he worked as a law agent and also established an auctioneer’s business. On one occasion, I spent a few days at their house at his invitation. His only son, Norman, was already a lawyer at the time, and his only daughter, Memory, married a farmer with the surname Walker. Recently, this report appeared in Die Burger: 'Pietermaritzburg: Three people walked out of the Synod of the Anglican Church here yesterday in protest against what they called the political nature of the decisions.' Among the three was Mrs. Memory Walker of Kuruman.

b. Hamilton Melville had already retired as a Bank Manager and had also been a widower for a long time when I met him. He farmed in the Theunissen district, but when I was in Theunissen, he sold the farm again and apparently retired completely. One of his daughters married Selwyn Jackson of Beaufort West during my time.

c. Cherry lived in Sea Point at the time. She had previously been married to a Budd, but I believe she later married a man with the surname Morris. Audrey and Valerie Budd are two beautiful daughters – her only children.

d. I met Blanche on two occasions. Once when she was on holiday at Klein Brak and another time when she was visiting her brother Hamilton on his farm in Theunissen. At the time she lived in Pietermaritzburg where her husband was the manager of a commercial bank. He spoke English. In fact, the whole family became English-speaking, but could also speak Afrikaans well.

5. Anna Maria Retief de Villiers

6. The youngest sister of Mother was Maria, married to Father's brother Stephanus Johannes Krynauw. That is why I have included her in the account of the Krynauw family.
